For this month, I have two main goals:

October 2024 Goals

1. Focus on Eating Healthy Food, Reading the Labels, and Eliminating the Junk! 🍩

This means I will focus on only supplying my body with the best foods! The foods we intake literally become part of us. The food fuels and heals our bodies and brain. When we become conscious of what we are eating, it becomes easy to make better choices. I've found that when I've made a good, healthy choice, it leads to another good choice, such as a nutritious meal after a workout. This creates a ripple effect of even more healthy, positive choices.

Making it a priority to focus on my diet will allow me to fine-tune and cut anything unhealthy. I live by the 80/20 rule. This allows for freedom and not unrealistic restrictions. The 80/20 rule is especially helpful with special occasions and holidays.

If I am getting a craving, I remind myself that the craving will pass, and most of the time they do! I try to give myself 24 hours. However, if it doesn't pass, and I still want it later, I allow myself to enjoy the treat. This prevents impulsive choices, and it stays true to me. Knowing that if I truly want something, I permit myself to have it.

Indulging in a treat on occasion will not derail your progress. We are human, we celebrate Holidays, Special Occasions, and Birthdays! As long as the majority of our choices are healthy, dessert isn't every day, and we are active through movement and exercise there is no need to worry.

Achieving your fitness goals should start in the kitchen by focusing on providing your body with the best fuel possible! As the saying goes, you will never be able to outwork a bad diet. So let's make as many nutritious choices as possible, all while still being human and enjoying life!

2. Increasing my Cardio 🏃‍♀️

My plan for October is to cycle for 30 minutes, 5 times a week. This will be on top of my normal Sculptness® Resistance Training Workouts. I've never been a Cardio Queen. However, I like to change up my workout routines and push myself. Cycling is a great way to increase my muscular endurance and cardiovascular health.

Bonus - Complete a 3 min. plank hold

I've only ever tried holding a plank for at most 2 minutes. So I've decided to achieve a 3-minute plank hold by October 31st.

Planks are an awesome way to strengthen the whole body. This isometric move is one that I like to sneak in when I don't have time for a complete workout.

Also, how is it that time seems to slow down when we are in a plank?

To finish psyching myself up for this challenge, I looked up the world record for a female plank hold and according to the Guinness World Records it is held (no pun intended) by DonnaJean Wilde, 58, who planked for 4 hours 30 minutes and 11 seconds. That is so impressive and puts into perspective my goal of 3 minutes!

Also, in 2017, Cher, 71 at the time, told People Magazine, that she stayed fit by doing planks every day. She stated, “I started out with 30 seconds and I thought I was gonna die. Now I do three to five minutes!"

Her quote is so relatable. We've all been there, especially when starting out! Cher demonstrated that it's tough at first but we get stronger and can achieve so much more when we push ourselves.

My plan for accomplishing this 3-minute plank will entail doing a plank every day, starting with a minute hold and gradually building on until I hit 3 minutes at the end of the month!

Fitness goals should be challenging and inspire you to live your best life. There's a huge mental component to working out and eating healthy that often gets overlooked. Whether it's the voice in your head that's hesitant to start a new workout program, press play, cave into the cravings, or the voice that creeps in the middle of a set questioning if you really need to do one more or hold that darn plank for 10 more seconds. From experience, I anticipate this voice and do everything in my power to drown it out with the other voice that is from my future self that feels strong, happy, and healthy because she achieves her goals and accomplishes what she sets out to do!

If you haven't developed that voice yet, no worries, you will! It just takes time and practice. I found that it often helps to have it modeled by someone else, so if you want some positive, motivational fitness guidance, I would love to be your Personal Trainer!
